Sparkly & Slimming….a Weight Loss Blog

Samantha's journey to slim down, while remaining sparkly!

Fatties, Winos and Druggies = Equal?!

My brother sent me this article and I have not stopped fuming since I read it.

http://www.shine.yahoo.com/channel/health/controversy-over-fatties-sparks-apology-2404430/

The author of the controversial blog entry titled “Should “Fatties” Get a Room?”,  Maura Kelly is not someone I’m familiar with. So, I did some Googling and it turns out she is a recovering anorexic. If we categorize all eating disorders (both over-eating and under-eating) into one “disease” – shouldn’t she have more compassion for “fatties”?

She says: “So anyway, yes, I think I’d be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other … because I’d be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything. To be brutally honest, even in real life, I find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room — just like I’d find it distressing if I saw a very drunk person stumbling across a bar or a heroine addict slumping in a chair.”

So wait…..HOLD UP! “Fatties” are now in the same category as alcoholics and drug addicts?! Really Maura? Really?

(P.S. – the word you’re looking for is HEROIN….not heroine).

I’m still shaking my head in disbelief.

How could a professional (with a self-proclaimed eating disorder!) be OK posting that kind of slander? She said herself she’s never watched the show (and neither have I) but judging by the time slot it’s in (CBS Mon @ 9:30pm) I can say without a doubt that it’s not a soft-core porn. You’re not seeing nudity from a major network during a primetime spot. If you were, MAYBE just maybe I could see your argument about not wanting to witness it. In addition, the characters on the show met and started dating during an Overeaters Anonymous meeting! So, they’re trying to lose weight and get healthy together!

Mike and Molly - for reference. I don't know about you, but they don't appear to be naked and groping each other do they?! Nope, didn't think so.

Should “Fatties” (btw I fucking hate that word with a PASSION) have to live in a cave while slimming down before being accepted back into society?

How would Maura feel if another blogger attached underweight people like Lindsey Lohan or Rachael Zoe? If they were compared to heroin addicts and winos….would it be kosher? I suspect not.

I think what actually outraged me more than her controversial article was the comments made by readers:

“Fatties should consider suicide. No one wants to look at you, never mind share the air with you.”

“Morbid obesity IS disgusting.”

and my favorite:

“Cancer is a disease you have no control over. Obesity is something that you do have control over. Shut your mouth, move your fat ass and maybe you won’t die.”

Sweet huh?

I’m constantly amazed by how ignorant people can be. In 2010 in the society we live in we STILL have these prejudices and hates? Honestly?! Oy.  Vey.

Lastly, Maura’s  “apology” was so insincere it was sickening…I really hope readers consider the content and contributors of Marie Claire before subscribing. I know I won’t pick their magazine up again!

I would really like to apologize for the insensitive things I’ve said in this post. Believe it or not, I never wanted anyone to feel bullied or ashamed after reading this, and I sorely regret that it upset people so much. A lot of what I said was unnecessary. It wasn’t productive, either.

Now, before I get comments about “the world isn’t fair” – I know it’s not, and I agree that people are entitled to their own opinions. That being said, I think the manner in which this blog posting by Maura was brought about it just plain tacky – especially for a “professional”.  If you wanted “open dialogue” then you shouldn’t compare us to druggies and winos ~ or say that we disgust you just by living.

So, sound off – and be honest:
